OKTOBERFEST 2008

>> Sunday, August 31, 2008

OKTOBERFEST! It's the German word for fun! Well, that may not be the actual translation, but to the folks attending Helen's Oktoberfest every year it may as well be. Oktoberfest in Helen may have started out small in the 70's, but over the years, and through word of mouth, it has grown into the biggest party in the Southeast. And this, is not one of those one-week festivals; this celebration lasts 2 months! The north Georgia mountains make a great vacation spot year-round, because of the unparalleled beauty and mild weather; however, during Oktoberfest Mother Nature kicks it up a notch. Deep azure skies and color splashed mountains surround a picturesque "alpine" village, making the days as inviting as the nights. During the day, you may decide to browse the shops, relax in a beer-garden, or simply enjoy Helen's perfect weather and beautiful scenery. At night, however, all paths lead to Helen's massive Festhalle. Located within walking distance of most hotels, the Festhalle is the spot for authentic German bands, food, beer, and fun. You can either spend the evening dancing the Polka and the chicken dance, or you can relax in the adjacent beer garden and enjoy the crisp night air. Whichever section of the huge Festhalle you like best, be sure to sample the fresh cooked wursts, and large variety of German beers. So, if you've never been to Helen, or just never been to an Oktoberfest, be sure to book your hotel room early and plan to be at Helen's Oktoberfest. We're sure you'll want to come back year after year. Prost!!

THE MAYOR'S ThAMES FESTIVAL

The Mayor’s Thames Festival is a spectacular, free celebration of London and its river. Taking place over the middle weekend in September between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge, the festival brings Londoners together in the very heart of the capital to dance, make sculptures, listen to music, watch movies, drink, eat, enjoy performances, sing, play on the beach, sail on the Thames and dance in the streets.
Essentially, we want to provide a celebration for London and its river, a city centre party if you like, one that is free and open to all. We want to close roads and bridges and transform them with culture. We want to educate and transform people’s ideas about the river, too. Most of all, we want people not just to be spectators, but to be active participants in this spectacular London event.
The Mayor’s Thames Festival is an annual free event celebrating our city’s greatest natural asset, the River Thames. The Festival takes place right in the heart of London, between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge, on the river banks and on the adjacent riverside walkways and public open spaces.
The Festival commissions high-profile, cutting-edge arts events for unique environments on and around the river. It also showcases the best in street arts, with pyrotechnics, illuminations, art installations, river events, street theatre, massed choirs, circus and music. It has grown to become the capital’s largest free, open-air arts festival.
The 2008 Thames Festival will take place on the 13th and 14th September - 2008 marks the festival’s 10th Anniversary.

Up Coming Events in EUROPE

EUROPE
Now, regardless or whether you will be traveling in a Camper Van Rental or Motor Home Rental, or using commercial transportation, here is some travel advice for popular destinations, from which you can plan your itinerary.
Let’s start with England. They have so many attractions in London alone, you could spend an entire month there and still not take them all in. Tower of London, London Dungeon, Tower Bridge, The Castle, The Thames, The Museums, and Trafalgar Square are just a few of the popular destinations. And many people prefer to use the subway, called the underground, even though it does travel above ground in some places. Outside of London they have military museums and such that will be interesting to see.

While in that part of Europe, why not motor (or whatever means of transport you choose) up to Wales and Scotland? Wales has some of the most beautiful countryside this side of Heaven, and who can forget Nessie (The Loch Ness Monster) and the other attractions (Castles and the Blarney Stone) to be found in Scotland? And while there don’t forget to try some Haggis!
Okay, you have finished your trip through that area, and now want to move on. How about using the Chunnel, the underground, and under water, tunnel that goes from England to France? When you reach France, consider some points of interest, such as Paris itself. The Eiffel Tower, the Arch de Triumph, the roadside sidewalk cafes, The Louvre, The Seine, Notre Dame, and even Disneyland, to name a few. When you leave Paris, be sure to plan to go through the wine country and enjoy some of the locally produced wines. They have been making wine for a very long time!
Next you can take in Spain, Italy, or Germany, or all three or just two. If you omit Spain (Bullfights and more), then I would suggest Italy and then Germany.
In Italy there is so much to offer. They have the Rome, Naples, Florence, and Venice to name a few areas. In Rome you can see the Vatican, the Coliseum, and much more. Sample some of their food and wine as well. Make sure to include Venice in your tour for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

In Germany, be sure to make a stop in Berlin, the re-united city. A lot of history from the last century came from there. While there be sure to see the Brandenburg Gate, and visit some of the museums that abound in the region. You can also visit the location of Checkpoint Charlie! And while in Germany, try some of their beer and sausages which they are famous for. A trip to Auschwitz would not be something to forget when touring this country with a long history of strife and conflict!
Continuing in our line of travel, the next country we come to is Poland. Places of interest there include Warsaw and Krakow. Poland was the birthplace of Pope John Paul II, the only Polish Pope. Poland is also the site of what was considered one of the changing revolutions, not only for that country, but for all of Europe, and the Soviet Union in particular. An interesting place to visit is the Holocaust Memorial at Majdanek, a former Nazi concentration camp near Lublin.
About 30 miles south of Krakow is the location of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. At least 1.5 million Jews, Roma (Gypsies), homosexuals, political prisoners, and others were killed at the Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland during World War II (1939-1945). Auschwitz was the largest such facility established by the Nazis, and came to be a symbol of the horrors of the Holocaust, and its name has become forever associated with genocide.

Following our itinerary, we come to Russia, land of the Tsars and Red Square, the Kremlin, St. Petersburg and St. Basil’s Cathedrals, The Ural Mountains, Siberian Tigers, Gum Department Store, Home of Tchaikovsky, composer of the famous 1812 Overture, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn the famous writer and dissident who was exiled and later returned upon the fall of Communism. This country is so rich in history which shaped the world as we know it today, and it has a lot of culture to be observed. Their industry is one of the strongest, and their country is the largest in Europe.
Next we come to Finland, with the capitol city of Helsinki. They have both ultra-modern buildings and old, walled castles. One castle of note is the Kastelholm Castle, located in the Åland Islands, Finland. Another is Olavanlinna Castle, the centerpiece of Savonlinna, a small city in southeast Finland, built in 1475 on what was then the border between Sweden-Finland and Russia. Founded in 1639, the scenic town of Savonlinna today attracts thousands of visitors annually to a prestigious opera festival held in the old castle.

Much of the country is located with the Artic Circle, and the country has many beautiful lakes, and thousands of small, mostly uninhabited islands. In the Artic region, they have almost continuous daylight from May through July, which attracts thousands of tourists. The Sauna, or Finnish Steam Bath is something that needs to be experienced. This is also the country of Reindeer, Ptarmigan, Snow Bunting, and Golden Plover. What is called The Great Church, can be found in Helsinki, the Capitol and chief port, political, commercial, educational, and cultural center of Finland. It is also an important industrial center of the country.
Next we come to Sweden, with the capitol city of Stockholm. This is the home of the famous Vikings of long ago, and Visby’s Ruins, located on the Swedish island of Gotland. Tower ruins in a residential neighborhood are a reminder of past glory at Visby. Visby reached its apex in the 12th century, when it became a key European trading center. Today the walled city is known for its dazzling rose gardens and centuries-old edifices.

It is also the home of Abba. After winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo,” the Swedish pop group Abba went on to become one of the most commercially successful bands of the 1970s. The group recorded songs in English to reach a wider audience. The band members were Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and Benny Andersson. If memory serves me right, they were two married couples who later divorced, but remain friends.
The Swedish fishing village and popular seaside resort of Fjällbacka is in the Bohuslän region, which extends from the city of Göteborg to the Norwegian border. For years, fishing was an important source of income here. Recently, however, tourism has gained ground. Kalmar Castle, on the southeast coast of Sweden, has played an important role in Scandinavian history. Built in the 12th century in the city of Kalmar, the castle was the site of an agreement uniting Sweden, Denmark, and Norway under a single monarch. Initiated in 1397, this alliance helped protect Scandinavia from hostile neighboring countries. Today, the castle houses an archaeological and ethnological museum. And there are many museums and libraries of interest.

Last on my Must See itinerary is Norway, often called the Land of the Midnight Sun, with the capitol city being Oslo. Vikings are a part of the historical past culture of this country. Like it’s neighbors, much of it is within the Artic Circle. In 1397 Norway became a province of Denmark and was dominated by that country until 1814, when Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden. The union was dissolved and it became an independent nation in 1905.
This is the place where the legendary Lemmings plunged into the sea. The story is partly true in that they live mostly in the higher areas of the country, but when overpopulation caused a scarcity of food, they went to the lower areas looking for food, and some accidentally ended up plunging into the sea.
One place of interest is located in the southwest town of Borgund. There you will find a 12th-century Norwegian stave church, with its pagoda-like interlocking roofs, constructed entirely of wood, and the best preserved of those remaining.. Hundreds of stave churches were built in Norway during the 11th and 12th centuries, but only about 30 remain standing today.

Norway has produced some of the world’s most famous explorers. The fearless Vikings preceded pioneers such as Fridtjof Nansen, who in 1888 was the first person to cross Greenland, and Roald Amundsen, who was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage and, in 1911, to reach the South Pole. In 1947 Thor Heyerdahl set out to prove his theory that people from South America had settled the islands of the South Pacific Ocean. He drifted 6,920 km (4,300 mi) from Peru to Polynesia on a balsa raft called the Kon-Tiki.
Norway was also known for Erik the Red, a Norwegian-born explorer Erik Thorvaldson, was the first person to explore Greenland, and he founded the first community on the island in about 985. The explorer began his journey to avoid a manslaughter charge in Iceland, where he had settled with his family. He became known as Erik the Red because of his red hair.
That concludes my list of places to visit and things to do when you are taking your Camper Van Rental or Motor Home Hire in Europe. If I have left anything out, it is simply because there is so much to see, and so many places to visit. But my list should get your started. Feel free to add or delete, as your interests may dictate. But, whatever you do, enjoy your tour of Europe in your Camper Van Hire or Motor Home Rental of Europe!

The USA, or the United States of America (America for short), located on the North American continent, is comprised of 50 States, 48 of them contiguous, or connected by borders, as I am sure most people who know anything about America understand. Everyone has knowledge of the vast size and diversity of the many states, and what they have to offer. Some of the more popular states for tourists are California, Florida, and even New York. America offers vast forests, parks, museums, cultural and industrial centers, amusement parks, sports facilities, camping parks, and so much more. But because of its vast size, and the distances between locations, the best way for you to see America is what we are offering you. Regardless of what state or states you choose to visit, Camper Travel USA offers you the perfect way to get the most out of your holiday. Renting a motorhome with Campertravel will allow you freedom of movement, as well as the luxury of a kind of portable home-away-from-home environment that will help you to make this the vacation you deserve. Picture yourself in your Motorhome RV - Hire USA, driving in perfect weather, through the hills, forests, and small towns of America. Can you imagine the excitement you will feel at gazing upon the lush and beautifully peaceful forests. Can you picture the quaint and interesting scenery in those small towns you will encounter when traveling in your USA RV rental.

One of the most interesting museums in the country is located in the Capitol region of Washington, District of Columbia, and is called the Smithsonian Museum. It is not one building, but a series of buildings where you can spend endless days touring, while using your Camper Travel USA rental vehicle as your base of operations. But there are interesting museums in every state, delicious food, festivals and events, and most major cities in America.
But let us suggest a couple of alternatives to those “most frequently visited” states and places where the majority of tourist go, and a few camping parks. There are two states we would like to offer for your consideration, and the best way to see them is in your USA campervan rental vehicle. One is Pennsylvania, and the other is Utah. There is much to see and do in these two states, and the number and combinations of destinations is endless. That is why we recommend using a Camper Travel USA rental.

First is Pennsylvania, officially the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, one of the Middle Atlantic States, and one of the 13 original states of the United States. Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia is its largest city. In Pennsylvania you can see and explore the world of a unique group of people, the Amish. They dress in a severely plain style, using hooks and eyes instead of buttons to fasten their clothes. They ride in horse-drawn buggies instead of automobiles, and the adult males wear beards. Religious services are held in homes; foot washing is practiced in connection with the communion service; discipline is enforced by shunning; and marriage with outsiders is condemned. The Supreme Court of the United States agreed that their right to the free exercise of their religion is protected and that the state’s concern for compulsory public education must yield to that consideration.

Tourism is virtually the only industry in the Pocono Mountains, along a popular resort area. In the more rugged woodlands of the Alleghenies several summer and winter resort areas have been developed, including a number of ski resorts. In addition, Pennsylvania’s many historic sites attract millions of visitors yearly. Picture yourself in your USA motorhome rental, touring through those mountains and maybe even taking in some of the resorts activities, including seeing one of their shows.
The state’s three major navigable waterways, the Delaware River, the Ohio River, and Lake Erie, have helped make Pennsylvania an important trade and transportation center since colonial times. What better way to see them, and travel around the marvelous waterways than in your USA RV Rental.

The other location we would suggest is the state of Utah, which is a state in the western United States, partly in the Rocky Mountains. Its great variety of landscapes includes high wooded mountains, lakes, valley oases, barren salt flats, deserts, and a wild plateau country with strange rock formations and rainbow-colored canyons. Imagine touring these in your motorhome. For the nature lovers, or the hunters, this state offers mule deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, bison (American buffalo), black bear, cougar, Rocky Mountain goat, and Rocky Mountain bighorn.
A number of museums in the state have exhibits pertaining to state and Mormon history, including the Mormon Church-affiliated Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City and the Pioneer Village Museum in Farmington. The University of Utah has museums of fine arts and natural history. Other museums in Utah include the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park in Vernal, the Children’s Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City, and the Fairview Museum of History and Art in Fairview. Again we suggest the use of your RV hire USA vehicle as the perfect way to interact with all these attractions, which are spread over a wide area.

You can marvel at all these and more thrilling destinations and sights for the family and even activities for the kids when using a USA campervan rental. Anyone can adjust to driving in America with our USA Motorhome driving information. Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta
Darwin invites you to the 34th Annual Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta. On 13th July 2008, Mindil Beach, Darwin NT Australia . This is a great family day where there are beach events for all ages and the water events! The Darwin Beer Can Regatta started unusually because of the devastation caused to Darwin by “Cyclone Tracy” in 1974. Because of the damage caused by the cyclone, materials and manpower from interstate were brought to Darwin to assist in the rebuilding of the city. Many of the work force personnel that were rebuilding the site were from the southern states, and were not used to the humidity, therefore the consumption of canned beer increased dramatically. As a result, there are empty beer cans littering the around Darwin and eventually became a litter problem. Thanks to Lutz Frankenfeld, he came up with the suggestion that Darwin should hold a boat race fabricated out of beer cans. It’s a chance to clean up the place and have some fun as well. Then after that it became an annual event known as the Darwin Lions Clubs, Beer Can Regatta. Join in on the fun with your family and check out the imaginative boats and entertainment.

Festival celebrating world culture

>> Thursday, August 21, 2008

BEIJING, June 10 -- In a circular letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) dated April 2, 1906, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games invited members to an advisory conference to determine "to what extent and in what form the arts and literature can participate in the celebration of the modern Olympiads".
Coubertin's version of Olympism - what the Olympic Movement aspires to be - is inextricably linked to the arts and humanities "harmoniously joined with sports". Thanks to his vision, his work has been as applicable to host cities of recent Olympic Games as it was to the nascent Olympic Movement of 1906.

In 2003, Norbert Muller, Manfred Messing, and the Research Team Olympia of the University of Mainz (Germany) studied the meaning of the cultural program to spectators. Research from the 2002 Salt Lake Games showed 84 percent of respondents agreed with the statement - "The Olympic idea combines sport and art." This significantly high response compares with 72 percent for the 2000 Sydney Games, 23 percent for Atlanta in 1996, and 40 percent for Barcelona in 1992. The research shows a trend in the growth of awareness of the significance of cultural and arts programs in Olympiads and Olympic Arts Festivals.

"The arts were always at the center of Coubertin's vision for the Olympic Movement. In the years of preparation required to deliver a credible Olympic cultural program, I have found that Coubertin's unflagging belief in the power of music, dance, and words was sustaining," Raymond T. Grant, the artistic director of the 2002 Olympic Arts Festival and managing director of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee writes in his article Contrast, Culture and Courage: A Cultural Administrator's tribute to Pierre de Coubertin. To inherit the cultural legacy of Coubertin and highlight the value of cultural programs within the Olympic Movement - and the connection between artists and athletes - Beijing will host 2008 Meet in Beijing Arts Festival to celebrate the achievements of athletes alongside the accomplishments of artists.

China Arts & Entertainment Group (CAEG) launches the Meet in Beijing Arts Festival every April to May. This year, under the direction of the Ministry of Culture, the festival has been postponed and expanded upon. It will start on June 23, International Olympics Day, and run until mid-September. "Sports, culture and education are the three main ideas of Coubertin, who is both a sport and arts administrator. The Beijing Olympics Games is a rare party for Chinese people to communicate with friends from all over the world. And, of course, the cultural and art events are an important part of the party," says Ding Wei, assistant to the Minister of Culture. "With the principles of Olympism - peace, friendship and progress, Beijing will provide a platform for locals and visitors to share culture and arts with each other and celebrate the accomplishments of artists from all over the world," Ding says. "Arts and sports both are universal languages that bridge people from different countries and backgrounds. I believe the cultural events will create a magic and harmonious atmosphere for the Olympic Games," says Zhang Yu, general manager of China Arts and Entertainment Group.

Some 260 shows ranging from music, dance and theater, and 160 exhibitions of visual arts from 80 countries, will run at the festival. Every year, the Meet in Beijing Arts Festival has a main guest country. This year, the focus will be on Greece, the birth country of the Olympic Games. At the Great Hall of the People on June 23, the festival will kick off with a ritual performance by some 40 Greek musicians and dancers along with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and dancers from the Beijing Dance Academy. The show is directed by Lambros Liavas, artistic director of the Greek National Opera, and choreographed by Artemis Ignation, who created the flame-lighting ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. It is a theatrical version of how the Olympic flame was lit at the Temple of Hera in Olympia. "Traditional Greek music and Chinese music have much in common, for example they are all five-tone scales. I believe we can understand each other better and easier through music," says Liavas who is also a professor of musicology at the University of Athens, and the founder and director of the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments.
